How to Choose a Plate Carrier: A Complete Buyer's Guide

Choosing a plate carrier can feel overwhelming — there are dozens of options at every price point, from budget MOLLE platforms to full quick-release systems. This guide covers everything you need to know to choose the right plate carrier for your needs, whether you're a civilian preparing for home defense, a law enforcement officer, or just someone who takes personal protection seriously.

What Is a Plate Carrier?

A plate carrier is a tactical vest designed to hold hard ballistic plates — typically Level III or Level IV ceramic or PE plates — in the front and back, and optionally in side pockets. Unlike soft body armor (which is sewn into a vest), a plate carrier holds removable hard armor plates that can be replaced or upgraded independently.

Key Features to Look For

Quick Release System

A quality plate carrier should have a quick release mechanism on both the shoulders and waist. In an emergency, you need to be able to strip the carrier off rapidly. The Redemption Tactical Crusader 2.0, Archangel 2.0, and Enforcer 2.0 all feature quick release buckles at both points.

MOLLE/PALS Webbing

MOLLE (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) webbing lets you attach pouches, medical kits, radios, and other accessories. Look for full MOLLE coverage on the front, back, and cummerbund panels.

Cummerbund and Side Plate Capability

A cummerbund wraps around your torso and can hold side plates (6x6, 6x8, or 8x6) for flank protection. If you're buying a carrier for serious use, side plate capability is important.

Plate Size Compatibility

Most carriers are designed for standard 10x12 inch plates. If you need a larger plate (10x13.5 or 11x14 for larger frames), make sure the carrier is rated for it. Redemption Tactical's Crusader 2.0 XL is designed specifically for oversized plates.

Material and Build Quality

Look for 500D or 1000D Cordura nylon. Multicam Cordura is the premium option. Cheaper polyester carriers exist but won't hold up under extended use or field conditions.

Plate Carrier Styles

Standard Plate Carrier

The most common type — holds front and back plates, with an optional side cummerbund. The Crusader 2.0 is a prime example: quick release on shoulders and waist, triple mag pouch, MOLLE front and back, side plate capable.

Concealable/Low-Profile Carrier

Designed to be worn under a jacket or loose clothing. Minimal MOLLE, lower profile. The RT Concealment carrier and EDC 2.0 fit this category. Good for plain-clothes or everyday carry use.

Full Coverage/MSOV

Modular Special Operations Vests like the RT Siege 2.0 offer maximum coverage with wraparound protection. Heavier but more protective, used for high-risk operations.

How to Size a Plate Carrier

Most plate carriers are one-size-fits-most with adjustable cummerbunds and shoulder straps. The key measurement is your torso height — the distance from your collarbone to the bottom of your sternum should roughly match your plate height (10 inches for a 10x12 plate). If you're a larger individual, look for XL-specific carriers.
